- Australia is a country but also a continent which contains Mainland Australia, Tasmania and Surrounding Islands
- Although most people believe it to be sydney or Melbourne the capital city of Australia is Canberra.
- Australia is the only country where Kangaroos exist, and they have a population of over 50 million.
- Australia is home to the Great Barrier Reef which is the biggest reef system in the world which is home to
over 350 species of coral and over 1500 species of fish across thousands of reefs.
- Australia is split into 6 different states: Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, Southern Australia
and Tasmania. It also has 2 territories, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory.
- Australia is 'discovered' by European explorers in the 17th century, however indigenous australians have lived there
for over 65,000 years.
Tourist Attractions!
Located in Sydney, the Sydney Opera House is one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. Amazingly shaped like huge
shells this building is located on Sydney's Bennelong Point and surrounded by water on 3 sides and the Royal Botanic
Gardens border it to the south.
Deep in the heart of Australia's Red centre, Uluru (Meaning Shadowy Place) is one of the most photographed natural wonders
in the country. The Striking red monolith forms the centerpiece of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.
Also located in Sydney is the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This bridge is the largest steel arch bridge in the world, Rising 134
metres above the Harbour and spans 500 metres. It is also used for Australia's new years eve firework displays in Sydney
Sport in Australia!
Sport first came to australia in 1810 when the first official athletics tournament was held. Shortly after this cricket,
horse racing and sailing clubs and competitions started. The national sport of Austrlia is cricket which was established in
1838 with the creation of Melbourne Cricket Club. Also created back in the 19th century is the Austrlian Football League which is
the most attended sport in modern days. Also as of recently australia have also created an official league for cricket, basketball
and rugby for both men and women.
